The regulation of Procaine usage is of great concern to the racing industry. It is commonly co-administered with Penicillin G to ease the discomfort of routine therapeutic administration of that antibiotic. Conversely, Procaine may also be used illegitimately to mask pain, resulting in the exercising of an equine whose best prescription would be time to rest and heal. The analytical challenge is to find a way to differentiate one intention from the other. Currently it is difficult to discriminate between the latter stages of the legitimate use of Procaine-Penicillin G and the possibility of localized nerve blockade immediately prior to racing. The recent identification of several previously unreported metabolites of Procaine offers a possible means to ascertain the time frame of the administration of Procaine. This talk will outline the identification of these previously unreported metabolites, and discuss future steps to elucidate the usefulness of metabolite profiling as a possible means of discriminating the intended use of this drug.
