Serology is an important component for diagnosis of disease in cattle. Serum is easily collected and transported and is therefore a convenient and valuable sample for submission. Many different serologic tests are offered to detect and quantify antibodies in bovine serum. Interpretation of results is often very useful but many times may be ambiguous or difficult to interpret.
Principles for use and of serology for specific purposes will be discussed. Appropriateness of tests, timing, rise and fall of antibody titer, use of single versus paired serum samples, antibody titer in relation to vaccination, and "normal" values generated by the PADLS serology laboratory will be presented. Specific examples of cases in which serology yielded definitive diagnostic results will be used as examples.
