The Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) is nationally recognized and accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. PADLS is supported by the Animal Health and Diagnostic Commission, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Pennsylvania State University Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences.
The PADLS approach of coordinating the resources and expertise of three laboratories into one system provides maximum service and effectiveness to the Commonwealth’s animal agriculture community. The three laboratories include:
Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory (Division of the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services)- located in Harrisburg
Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (The Pennsylvania State University)-located in University Park
New Bolton Center Laboratory (University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine)-located in Kennett Square
In addition to providing laboratory services, PADLS also provides Field Investigation. Field Investigation teams are located at Kennett Square and University Park and assist private practitioners with diagnostic challenges and provide on-farm expertise.
The mission of PADLS encompasses comprehensive diagnostic services for all animal species involved in agriculture. Under the Animal Health and Diagnostic Commission’s leadership, PADLS has made steady progress in expanding technical expertise, testing volume capabilities, quality assurance, and coordination with national standards and surveillance initiatives.
We hope the future holds even more client-oriented service capabilities such as versatile electronic reporting, secure web-based access to test results and billing, and seamless integration with disease certification programs. PADLS represents a tremendous resource to facilitate profitable agriculture and to safeguard both animal and human health in Pennsylvania. Help us to make PADLS become as user-friendly as possible while fulfilling this important mission.
