The mission of the Virology section is the provision of timely and accurate diagnoses of viral diseases. The laboratory has five working areas:
Tests and assays are arranged by a weekly schedule but emergency submissions are done upon arrival of the specimen. The cell culture laboratory maintains a variety of cell lines and SPF embryonating chicken eggs to provide virus isolate and identify viruses in a variety of species. Electron microscopy to identify viruses is used when viruses are difficult to propagate in cell cultures or to identify the morphology of new pathogens when assays are unavailable. Detection methods for viruses employing biotechnology are used to enhance sensitivity and specificity of tests and decrease turnaround of results.
1Tissue/Specimen guidelines for aquaculture virology submission are as follows:
| Under 4 cm | Entire fish (remove yolk sac if present) |
| 4-6 cm | Entire viscera (including kidney) |
| Over 6 cm | Kidney, spleen, and gill filaments |
| Sexually mature | Ovarian fluid, kidney, spleen, gill filaments and Milt (male reproductive fluid) |
